The Flu vaccine in Israel is available now!!  It’s important that you go now while flu vaccine supply lasts!! In previous years, there have been shortages of the vaccine. 

Why should people get the flu vaccine?

1. Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death.
2. Between 80% and 90% of flu related deaths occur in people 65 years and older. So the vaccine is a must for seniors! Other people at risk include people of all ages with pre-existing chronic health conditions, children, and pregnant women.
3. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.
4. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community. This is especially important if you are living in a dormitory!
5. No one wants to get sick, but for students here for the year, your time in Israel is precious. Why spend time being sick in bed?

The flu vaccine is recommended to the general population from 6 months of age and on. The vaccine is of particular importance to population aged 65 and up, people which chronic health problems, healthcare workers and pregnant women. Pregnant women are at a high risk for serious morbidity and even death from influenza.  It is highly recommended to pregnant women.  It will protect the mother and the baby.

If you are an Israeli resident it’s easy to get the flu vaccine.  All you need to do is go to the nurses’ station at your kupah (health clinic) and ask for it.  No prescription is necessary.

For tourists and students getting a Flu vaccine in Israel is a bit more complicated.  You can:

1. Call the Ministry of Health *5400, make an appointment for a “flu vaccine for tourist”. According to your location, an appointment will be made at the closest Ministry of Health Center. Cost:122 shekels

OR

2. In Jerusalem go to the Wolfson Medical Center on Diskin Street (02) 561-0297. At the nurses’ station you will be given a prescription for the vaccine. Go downstairs to the pharmacy and buy the vaccine (60 shekels). Return to the nurses’ station and receive the flu vaccine for 110 shekels. Total cost: 170nis
